A 25-year-old Indian student tragically lost her life while six others sustained injuries in a road accident near Chicago in the United States, officials confirmed on Monday (Indian time).

According to authorities, the accident took place late on Saturday night along Interstate 65 near Crown Point in Lake County, Indiana.

Local media reports identified the deceased student as Navya Gadusu. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed that she was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on Sunday. Officials stated that she succumbed to blunt force traumatic injuries suffered during the crash.

Reacting to the incident, the Consulate General of India, Chicago expressed deep sorrow and stated that it remains in close contact with the victim’s family.

In a statement shared on X, the Consulate conveyed condolences to Navya’s family and friends and added that it is also coordinating with community members assisting the injured passengers.

According to the Indiana State Police, the accident occurred at around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday. Investigators said a red minivan carrying seven adults was moving at a very slow speed behind another vehicle that was reportedly facing mechanical issues.

Police stated that a car approaching from behind failed to recognise the slow-moving minivan in time and attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision. However, the vehicle crashed into the left side of the minivan with significant force, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a ditch.

Authorities clarified that the vehicle experiencing mechanical trouble was not directly involved in the crash.

During the investigation, officials also revealed that the minivan had only two proper front seats. Police said the remaining five passengers were sitting on boxes of mangoes without seat belts at the time of the accident.

The case is currently under investigation by the Indiana State Police.
