A series of viral videos showing Indian tourists behaving disruptively in public spaces abroad has sparked fresh debate on social media about travel etiquette and its broader impact on India’s global image.
Clips of individuals dancing on airport tarmacs in Vietnam, creating disturbances in supermarkets in the United States, and traveling in large groups that some locals reportedly find overwhelming have drawn widespread attention online.
Against this backdrop, senior IPS officer Arun Bothra, Additional DGP, CID-Crime & Transport Commissioner, Odisha, addressed the issue on social media platform X, urging greater responsibility among overseas travelers.
He stated that individuals whose conduct abroad tarnishes the country’s image should face consequences, including, in serious cases, temporary restrictions on foreign travel. According to him, holding an Indian passport comes with the responsibility to respect local laws and maintain appropriate public behaviour.
Responding to criticism suggesting that such concerns were unnecessary, Bothra clarified that his worry was not about international perception but about policy consequences. He pointed out that inappropriate behaviour by some travellers could lead to stricter visa regulations for all Indians, citing Thailand’s recent visa policy revision as an example.
Thailand recently moved India from its visa-exemption list to a Visa on Arrival category as part of a broader review of immigration and security policies.
Bothra also highlighted the practical implications of such incidents, noting that repeated disruptive behaviour risks creating discomfort and suspicion among host communities.
His remarks have reignited an ongoing discussion about responsible tourism and the collective responsibility of travellers at a time when international travel from India is at record levels.
