Even before its release, “Idupu Kayitam” has become one of the most talked-about Telugu films, thanks largely to its intriguing title. Backed by producer Bunny Vas, the film has generated widespread curiosity, with conversations extending beyond the story to the meaning behind its name.

For many Telugu-speaking audiences, particularly those from Andhra Pradesh, the title initially came as a surprise. Some assumed it was a dubbed film because of the unfamiliar phrase, while others took to social media to troll the title without knowing its origin or significance.

However, “Idupu Kayitam” is not a borrowed word but an old Telangana expression rooted in local culture. In earlier times, before formal legal procedures became common for marital separations, disputes between couples were often resolved by village elders. The written document recording the mutual separation was traditionally referred to as an “Idupu Kayitam.”

The discussion has since expanded beyond the title itself. Many have questioned why a regional Telugu word should face resistance when audiences have readily accepted film titles derived from other languages or dialects. Titles such as Kantara, Palli Chattambi, Kothaloka, and even Mirai were embraced without much debate, despite some not being native Telugu words.

The ongoing conversation has unfortunately sparked unnecessary regional arguments on social media between sections of audiences from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. While the controversy has undoubtedly increased the film’s visibility, many believe it should instead serve as an opportunity to appreciate the richness, history, and diversity of the Telugu language rather than create divisions over regional dialects.

Whether intentional or not, Idupu Kayitam has already succeeded in getting everyone talking. Now, the focus will shift to whether the film itself can live up to the curiosity created by its title.
