The Andhra Pradesh government is exploring new initiatives to boost tourism and strengthen revenue generation, with the proposed beach shack policy emerging as one of its latest pilot projects. The initiative aims to introduce regulated beach shacks at select coastal destinations to enhance the tourist experience while creating new economic opportunities.
The proposal has, however, sparked mixed reactions. While supporters believe beach shacks could make Andhra Pradesh’s beaches more attractive to domestic and international tourists, critics have expressed concerns that allowing liquor-serving outlets near beaches could affect the family-friendly atmosphere and local culture.
Amid the debate, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is said to have laid down clear guidelines during discussions on the proposal. According to reports, he instructed officials and ministers to ensure that adequate safeguards are put in place before implementing the project, with priority given to maintaining public order and preserving the character of beach destinations.
Clarifying the government’s position, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anita stated that the beach shack initiative is only a pilot project and should not be viewed as a statewide rollout. She emphasized that the government is testing the concept on a limited scale to assess its feasibility, tourism potential, and financial viability.
The minister said public feedback would play a crucial role in determining the future of the initiative. Along with evaluating its economic benefits, the government will also consider people’s opinions and the overall impact on local communities before taking a final decision.
Based on the response from tourists, residents, and other stakeholders, the Andhra Pradesh government will decide whether to expand the beach shack model to other locations or discontinue the proposal altogether. The pilot project is intended to help policymakers make an informed decision while balancing tourism development with social and cultural considerations.
