Israeli forces carried out fresh airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Wednesday, according to Lebanese state media, despite the recently announced agreement aimed at ending the broader Middle East conflict. The latest attacks underscore the fragile nature of the truce and the continuing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli warplanes targeted the Nabatieh al-Fawqa area and the eastern outskirts of the nearby town of Kfar Tebnit. In addition, an Israeli drone strike reportedly hit the town of Ansariyeh in the Zahrani region.
Although violence in Lebanon has eased since the US-Iran agreement to end the regional conflict was announced on Monday, sporadic Israeli strikes have continued. According to NNA, at least five people have been killed in southern Lebanon since the deal was unveiled.
The relative decline in hostilities has encouraged some residents to return to their towns and villages to assess the damage. However, the Lebanese army has urged civilians to postpone their return, warning of the continued threat posed by Israeli military operations and possible violations.
The conflict intensified earlier this year when the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement launched rocket attacks on Israel following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in joint US-Israeli strikes. Israel responded with a large-scale air campaign and ground operations inside Lebanon.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday that any resolution to the conflict would remain incomplete without the withdrawal of Israeli troops from territories occupied during the war. He warned that further Israeli military action in Lebanon or the continued presence of Israeli forces would, in Tehran’s view, constitute a violation of the existing memorandum of understanding.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday that Israeli troops would remain in Lebanon “for as long as necessary,” signaling that security concerns continue to outweigh diplomatic efforts.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah has remained largely silent regarding military operations since Tuesday and has not claimed responsibility for any attacks against Israeli targets in southern Lebanon. The group’s leader, Naim Qassem, is scheduled to deliver a televised address later on Wednesday. In remarks made on Tuesday, he expressed gratitude to Iran for its efforts in securing what he described as an immediate and permanent halt to military operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the death toll from Israeli attacks since the outbreak of the conflict has risen to 3,826, with rescue teams continuing to recover bodies from destroyed buildings and debris.
Despite the recent diplomatic breakthrough, the latest developments highlight the challenges facing efforts to secure a lasting peace in the region, with tensions between Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran remaining far from resolved.
