Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has once again found himself at the center of a political controversy following his remarks about the recent road accident involving the son of former minister Sidiri Appalaraju.
Jagan visited Visakhapatnam on Tuesday to console the families of those who lost their lives in the recent boat capsize tragedy. However, it was his comments to the media afterward that sparked widespread debate.
Reacting to the case registered against Sidiri Appalaraju’s 18-year-old son, who has been booked after a fatal road accident, Jagan questioned the severity of the charges. He remarked that the teenager was only 18 years old and that road accidents can happen, asking whether such a young person should face a murder charge. He also questioned whether the government was showing humanity in handling the case.
The remarks have drawn criticism from political observers and sections of the public, who argue that while accidents may be unintentional, every fatal accident results in the loss of a human life and carries legal consequences. They point out that an 18-year-old is legally recognized as an adult in India, with the right to vote and other legal responsibilities, making age alone an insufficient basis for seeking leniency.
Critics also argue that if an individual is considered mature enough to ride a vehicle on public roads, they are equally expected to be accountable under the law if a tragic accident occurs. They stress that the legal process should determine the nature of the offence based on evidence rather than public statements from political leaders.
Many believe that while it is natural for Jagan to stand by his party leaders and their families during difficult times, publicly defending an accused person in a sensitive case could invite unnecessary criticism and shift attention away from the victims and their families.
Political analysts note that Jagan’s repeated attempts to criticize the government are often overshadowed by controversial remarks that become the focus of public discussion. They believe such statements risk weakening his political messaging and providing ammunition to his opponents, even when he intends to raise questions about the government’s actions.
