Dhurandhar Stumbles in Japan
July 12, 2026

After creating history at the box office in India and North America, Bollywood blockbuster Dhurandhar made its theatrical debut in Japan on July 10. However, the spy action thriller has failed to make the expected impact during its opening day in the country.
According to early box office tracking, the film had a disappointing start and could not secure a place among the top 25 films at the Japanese box office. Despite releasing on nearly 80 screens by the end of its first day, Dhurandhar reportedly recorded fewer than 900 admissions, resulting in a below-par opening.
Trade observers believe the film’s underwhelming start can be attributed to the lack of a well-planned release strategy. Although Indian films have built a loyal audience in Japan over the years, Dhurandhar arrived with minimal promotional activity, and the chosen release window is also being viewed as less than ideal.
These factors appear to have significantly affected the film’s opening-day performance. Adding to the disappointment, Dhurandhar failed to enter the list of the top 10 biggest opening-day performers for an Indian film in Japan.
Its opening has drawn comparisons with Pushpa 2, which also fell short of expectations in Japan by finishing outside the top 10. In contrast, RRR continues to hold the record for the biggest opening day for an Indian film in Japan with around 8,230 admissions, followed by Saaho (6,510) and Kalki 2898 AD (3,700).
The film’s performance over the weekend will now be crucial. Unless Dhurandhar witnesses a significant turnaround through positive word of mouth, its box office prospects in Japan could remain limited.
