RGV All Praise for Horror Film Obsession

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has showered praise on the supernatural horror film Obsession, calling it a refreshing example of how strong filmmaking can triumph without the backing of major stars or massive budgets.

Taking to social media platform X, RGV expressed his admiration for the film and stated that Obsession has challenged the long-standing industry belief that only big-budget spectacles and star-driven projects can attract audiences to theatres.

“Am OBSESSED with OBSESSION,” Varma wrote, adding that the film has effectively reset conventional assumptions about theatrical success.

According to RGV, one of the film’s biggest achievements is that it succeeds without relying on traditional commercial ingredients. He pointed out that Obsession features no major stars, extravagant locations, lavish production design, foreign schedules, or high-profile technicians. He even suggested that despite reports of a much larger budget, the film appears to have been made on a remarkably modest scale.

Varma highlighted how the film was largely shot across just a few locations, including rooms inside a simple house, a car interior, and a small store, proving that compelling storytelling and effective execution matter more than scale.

The director reserved special praise for filmmaker Barker’s visual storytelling and editing techniques. He noted that Barker’s framing choices, particularly the unusual use of excessive headroom in several shots, create a distinctive visual atmosphere that enhances the film’s unsettling mood.

RGV was equally impressed by the editing style, describing it as a psychological tool rather than merely a technical process. He praised the way Barker combines rapid cuts with extended pauses to build tension and keep viewers emotionally invested.

He also applauded the film’s innovative sound design, pointing out how sharp audio cues such as door slams, laughter, and heartbeats are seamlessly integrated into the editing rhythm to amplify suspense and fear.

According to Varma, Barker intentionally breaks away from conventional editing rules and instead focuses on making audiences experience the same instability and discomfort felt by the characters. This approach, he said, gives the film an unpredictable energy that becomes an integral part of its horror experience.

The veteran filmmaker further praised the lighting design, drawing comparisons to the atmospheric visual style often associated with acclaimed director David Fincher.

Concluding his review, RGV stated that while the film’s box-office performance has been impressive, its groundbreaking editing, sound design, and character work deserve even greater attention from filmmakers and film students.

Starring Michael Johnston as Bear and Inde Navarrette as Nikki, Obsession follows a man whose desperate desire to win over his longtime crush triggers a series of disturbing supernatural events. The film was released in India on May 29 and has since generated considerable attention among horror enthusiasts.
