Modi Attends Seychelles National Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the National Day celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ Independence on Sunday, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to be invited as the Guest of Honour for the prestigious event.

The celebrations showcased the close and longstanding ties between India and Seychelles. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), an Indian marching contingent comprising personnel from the Army and Navy participated in the ceremonial parade. An Indian Naval band also joined the celebrations, underscoring the strong defence and strategic partnership shared by the two countries.

As a special gesture of friendship, Indian Navy ships INS Tarkash and INS Ikshak were docked at Port Victoria during the celebrations, symbolizing India’s enduring commitment to its maritime partner in the Indian Ocean. Prime Minister Modi also extended warm greetings to the people of Seychelles on the landmark occasion.

During his state visit, PM Modi held bilateral talks with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie. The two leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of India-Seychelles relations and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across several key sectors, including healthcare, education, digital transformation, capacity building, renewable energy, sustainable development, social infrastructure, maritime security, and defence.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, with particular focus on challenges facing the Indian Ocean region, including illegal fishing, drug trafficking, and piracy. They expressed satisfaction over the progress of projects implemented under India’s Special Economic Package and discussed ways to further strengthen development cooperation.

Reiterating India’s commitment to Seychelles’ growth and prosperity, Prime Minister Modi assured continued support for the island nation’s development priorities while emphasizing the shared vision of a stronger, more resilient partnership built on mutual trust, security, and sustainable development.
