National Award-winning editor Naveen Nooli has long been regarded as one of Tollywood’s finest technicians, earning acclaim for his sharp and engaging editing in several blockbuster films. However, as often happens in the film industry, success can be short-lived.

In recent months, a string of high-profile films associated with Naveen—including Kingdom, Mass Jathara, and Peddi—have failed to impress at the box office, leading to criticism of his work. The backlash intensified after the release of Ram Charan’s Peddi, with many viewers and critics complaining about the film’s lengthy runtime, slow-paced sequences, and noticeable jump cuts. A section of the audience blamed Naveen for the film’s editing.

Amid the growing criticism, producer Naga Vamsi has come forward in support of the acclaimed editor. In an exclusive interview with Gulte, Vamsi defended Naveen and urged audiences not to hold the editor solely responsible for a film’s shortcomings.

Explaining the realities of filmmaking, Vamsi said that what appears on screen is the result of several creative and technical decisions made throughout production. He stressed that an editor of Naveen Nooli’s calibre would never deliberately deliver substandard work.

According to Vamsi, many editing challenges stem from limitations in the script, production, or available footage rather than the editor’s skills. He added that editors often have to make difficult compromises to ensure the narrative remains coherent with the material they receive.

Vamsi concluded by saying it is unfair to single out the editor whenever a film underperforms, as filmmaking is a collaborative process in which every department contributes to the final outcome.
