Today marks the 103rd birth anniversary of legendary actor and former Chief Minister Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR). As part of a yearly tradition, NTR’s grandson NTR has been publishing a newspaper advertisement remembering his grandfather and also paying homage at the NTR Ghat.
Following the tradition, he visited the NTR Ghat early this morning and offered his respects. Large numbers of fans gathered at the venue, raising slogans like “CM NTR,” creating a charged atmosphere. Interestingly, the intensity of these slogans appeared higher this year, reportedly influenced by the recent political success of Tamil actor Joseph Vijay in Tamil Nadu.
Supporters drew parallels between cinema and politics, especially after Vijay’s entry into politics, which has reignited discussions about film stars transitioning into political leadership. However, contrasting opinions also emerged, noting the earlier political setbacks of actors like Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan, whose attempts to establish strong political footing did not yield the expected results.
Analysts point out that Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh political landscapes are quite different and cannot be directly compared. In Tamil Nadu, the vacuum created after Jayalalithaa’s demise and internal issues within AIADMK, along with anti-incumbency against DMK leadership, contributed to a unique political environment that favoured new entrants.
In Andhra Pradesh, however, the Telugu Desam Party already has a strong organisational structure, and Nara Lokesh has steadily gained acceptance among party cadres and the public as a key future leader. Against this backdrop, speculation about NTR taking over the party leadership is seen by many as unrealistic and often politically motivated narratives.
At present, NTR is fully focused on his film career and is actively working towards expanding his reach as a pan-India star. Industry observers believe he has no immediate political ambitions, and by the time such a scenario might even arise, the political landscape would likely undergo significant changes.
For now, discussions around his political entry remain speculative and far-fetched, while his primary focus continues to be cinema.
