Obsession: A Disturbing Psychological Thriller with a Supernatural Twist

I had been hearing about Obsession for quite some time. The film was reportedly made on a shoestring budget of just USD 750,000 (around ₹7 crore), yet it went on to become a global phenomenon, earning over USD 225 million worldwide.
At an exchange rate of ₹96 to a dollar, that comes to an astonishing ₹2,160 crore. Numbers like these naturally spark curiosity.
I had been planning to watch it for weeks but kept postponing it. Finally, I made it to the theatre today, weeks after its release.
Going in, I knew almost nothing about the storyline. All I had heard was that it was an intense psychological thriller with a mysterious “make a wish” concept at its core. Beyond that, I went in completely blind.
My first impression was unusual. For the opening few minutes, the film felt almost like an extended YouTube short. The characters, dialogue, ambient sound, and overall presentation seemed very different from the polished cinematic experience one expects in theatres.
But within about fifteen minutes, the film slowly pulled me in. Its atmosphere, tone, and unsettling mood gradually took over.
As the title suggests, Obsession revolves around the extreme and disturbing fixation of a woman named Nikky on her colleague Bear.
The reasons behind her obsession are linked to the mysterious “One Wish Willow” element, which is better left unexplained to avoid spoilers.
This is one of those films that works best when watched with minimal prior knowledge. What stood out most was the intensity of certain sequences—some scenes are so unsettlingly staged that they linger in your mind long after the credits roll.
On a lighter note, I will say this: after watching Obsession, I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for husbands dealing with overly possessive partners who blur the line between love and obsession.
As a woman, one might expect sympathy toward Nikky, but the film surprisingly pushes viewers to see the other side as well—the emotional strain of being trapped in such consuming relationships.
Of course, Obsession explores these themes through a fictional and supernatural lens, using the “One Wish Willow” concept rather than a conventional relationship setup. That imaginative element is exactly what makes its unsettling narrative so compelling.
