S. Joseph Vijay Approves Five Shows Per Day For Tamil Films

S. Joseph Vijay has introduced a major relief for the Tamil film industry by approving five shows per day in theatres across the state during the first week of new Tamil film releases.

According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, representatives from the film industry recently met Vijay and submitted several requests aimed at supporting theatres and boosting box office collections. One of the key demands was permission to screen five shows daily for all newly released Tamil films.

At present, under Rule 14-A of the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres are generally allowed to screen only four shows per day. An additional special show could previously be screened only on festival days or public holidays after obtaining permission from the concerned authorities.

Following discussions with industry representatives on May 16, 2026, Chief Minister Vijay approved amendments to the existing rules. As per the revised order, all theatres in Tamil Nadu can now screen five shows a day for the first seven days from the release date of a new Tamil film.

The new order also allows theatres to operate five daily shows during local festival days, public holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays without requiring separate permission from district authorities or the government.

The decision is being seen as a significant boost for producers, distributors, and theatre owners, especially at a time when the industry is looking to maximize opening week revenues for big releases.

Meanwhile, Vijay had earlier congratulated the team of “Karuppu,” starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, after the film received a strong response at the box office following its release on May 15.
