Rahul Gandhi Leadership Under Scanner as Congress Faces Internal Power Struggles

Share

The Congress high command under Rahul Gandhi is increasingly being viewed within political circles as relatively weak in terms of organisational control and leadership influence.

Some observers often compare Rahul Gandhi’s leadership style to that of his father, Rajiv Gandhi, describing it as soft-spoken and less assertive. In contrast, former leaders like Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are widely seen as having exercised stronger authority over the party structure and maintained tighter discipline within the organisation.

Recent political developments have further strengthened such perceptions. After the Congress’ electoral success in Kerala, it is reported that Rahul Gandhi preferred K.C. Venugopal for the Chief Minister’s post. However, he was unable to consolidate support for that decision, as V.D. Satheesan and his camp emerged more influential in shaping the final leadership outcome.

Similarly, during the prolonged leadership tussle in Karnataka between Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar, Rahul Gandhi was seen as struggling to assert control over the situation. Party insiders suggest that it was only after Priyanka Gandhi’s intervention that tensions eased and D.K. Shivakumar’s position within the power structure was strengthened.

In Telangana, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is often perceived as functioning with a considerable degree of independence. His public actions, including the inauguration of an NTR statue in Hyderabad and cordial interactions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have sparked discussions within political circles about his autonomous approach, with limited visible intervention from the central leadership.

In Andhra Pradesh as well, questions have been raised regarding Y.S. Sharmila’s political positioning, as she is often viewed as maintaining a more cooperative relationship with the TDP. Despite such perceptions, the Congress high command has largely remained silent on the matter.

Collectively, these developments have led to arguments in some quarters that the Congress party may function more effectively under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi rather than Rahul Gandhi.

Nevertheless, the party continues to hold significant presence in southern India. Both supporters and critics acknowledge that Congress’ recent successes in Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, and its alliance-driven influence in Tamil Nadu are largely attributed to strong regional leadership rather than central command decisions.
