Maverick filmmaker penned an emotional tribute to the late King of Pop after watching the upcoming biographical film “Michael.”
Varma revealed that the film took him back to the heartbreaking day of June 25, 2009, when news of Michael Jackson’s death shocked the world. He recalled waking up to the haunting television headline that read, “Michael Jackson is Dead,” and struggling to believe the unimaginable truth.
Reflecting on his first experience watching Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” video during his engineering college days in Vijayawada in 1984, Varma described it as a life-changing moment. He said the performance felt like “an invasion” that completely transformed his understanding of music, dance, and visual storytelling.
According to Varma, Michael Jackson was never just an entertainer but a “supernatural entity” whose presence, aura, and artistry were beyond human. He praised legendary videos like “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Black or White,” and “Remember the Time,” saying they became benchmarks that influenced countless cinematic and song visualization discussions throughout his career.
Varma admitted that controversies surrounding Jackson never mattered to him because the artist’s impact on his senses and soul outweighed everything else. He said he “hates” Michael Jackson only because his death shattered the fantasy that someone so extraordinary could still be mortal.
Ending on an emotional note, Varma wrote that he would forever carry the magical daze Michael Jackson gave him from that small Vijayawada video parlour experience, adding that he imagines the legend “moonwalking across galaxies” even now.
