Nagabandham, which hit theatres a few days ago, has become a talking point not only for its box-office performance but also for the story behind its making.
According to industry sources, the film was initially conceived with Rana Daggubati in the lead role. The script was narrated to him, and he is said to have responded positively. However, the project failed to progress as the makers reportedly took too long to finalize and launch it.
During this phase, producer Miriyala Ravinder, uncle of actor Virat Karna, reportedly came across the project. He decided to back it, retaining the original director and production team while introducing Virat Karna as the lead actor.
The film was originally planned with a budget of around ₹45 crore. As production progressed, however, the scale expanded significantly, with the overall cost reportedly rising to nearly ₹110 crore.
Industry insiders claim that some members of the team had advised the makers to rein in the spending, cautioning that the mounting budget could become risky. Despite those concerns, the producers reportedly chose to place their faith in the script and the filmmaker, continuing to invest in the project.
In hindsight, Nagabandham appears to be a film driven as much by conviction and trust as by commercial planning. Had it emerged as a blockbuster, the producers would likely have been praised for taking a bold gamble and believing in the project against the odds.
However, with the film failing to deliver the expected result, the same decision-making process is now being questioned, with many arguing that large-scale films should be backed by careful financial planning rather than emotion or optimism alone.
As for Rana Daggubati, the outcome offers an interesting twist. If Nagabandham had become a massive success, missing the film might have seemed like a lost opportunity. Given its current performance, however, he may well feel that things worked out in his favor.
