Rajamouli’s Varanasi Faces Silence Ahead of Release

Visionary filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli’s globe-trotting action adventure Varanasi is easily one of the most anticipated Indian films on the horizon. With sky-high expectations, the film is expected to set new box office benchmarks, and the powerful title glimpse has already showcased why Rajamouli is regarded as a master craftsman.

Starring Mahesh Babu, the film is less than a year away from its grand global release. However, there has been a noticeable silence from the makers since the official release date announcement earlier this year. It has been over six months since the initial glimpse was unveiled amid massive fanfare and international media attention, and since then, no major updates have followed.

While Rajamouli is known for his sharp promotional strategies and deep understanding of audience pulse, the prolonged lack of updates for a project of this scale is creating a gap between the film and its audience. With just about 11 months to go, there is growing expectation that the team will soon release fresh content to sustain and build hype.

Aiming for a worldwide release in multiple languages with ambitious box office targets, Varanasi requires a carefully planned and aggressive marketing campaign—possibly even more extensive than Rajamouli’s previous films. Still, content remains the key driver for anticipation, and fans are eager for new glimpses, teasers, or promotional material.

The film is rumored to feature Mahesh Babu in multiple roles, including Rudra and Lord Rama, in a large-scale mythological narrative. The cast also includes Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles, with their first-look posters revealed ahead of the title glimpse last year.
Varanasi is currently scheduled for a worldwide release on April 7, 2027.
