Suriya’s Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji and starring Trisha as the female lead, emerged as one of the biggest Tamil blockbusters of the year. Despite facing criticism from some quarters over its portrayal of the judicial system, the film won widespread appreciation from audiences and went on to become a major box-office success. Released in Telugu as Veerabhadrudu, the film also performed well and continued to receive praise after its OTT premiere.
Even before the release of the first film, RJ Balaji had confirmed that Karuppu would have a sequel. The climax also hinted at the next chapter, setting the stage for a new conflict. While the first installment revolved around a fight involving the judicial system, the sequel is expected to shift its focus toward politics.
However, the director has now indicated that Karuppu 2 will not go on floors anytime soon.
Speaking during a recent interaction, RJ Balaji said he is yet to fully develop the sequel’s story, though he confirmed that the narrative is likely to have a political backdrop. He admitted that making a politically charged film requires careful consideration, especially in the current political climate.
According to the filmmaker, he will move forward with the sequel only after finding a compelling political storyline that justifies the next chapter. Until then, the project will remain on hold.
The decision has disappointed many fans, who have been eagerly waiting for the sequel following the massive success of Karuppu. Industry observers believe the political nature of the proposed story has prompted the director to adopt a cautious approach before taking the project into production.
Trisha, who played a key role in the first film, is expected to return for the sequel if and when it goes into production, although the makers are yet to make any official announcement regarding the cast or the shooting schedule.
For now, Karuppu 2 remains one of the most anticipated sequels in Tamil cinema, with fans waiting to see when RJ Balaji decides the time is right to bring the project back on track.
