Chinmayi Opens Up About Dubbing for Trisha in Karuppu

Trisha Krishnan and Suriya’s much-awaited Tamil film Karuppu finally released in theatres on May 15 after facing initial show cancellations due to financial disputes.

A day after the film’s release, singer and dubbing artiste Chinmayi Sripaada publicly revealed on X that she had provided the dubbing voice for Trisha in the movie. However, her announcement also reflected fear and emotional vulnerability because of the controversies she faced in the past.

“Strange — I am readying myself saying this… I was genuinely afraid this time of sharing that I dubbed in Karuppu,” Chinmayi wrote.

She further explained that her long association with director RJ Balaji and his family made her even more cautious about potential backlash.

“I have known RJ Balaji for a long time. He and his wife are such lovely people. He is someone whose life is a story of grit and determination. I was worried about the kind of pushback he might face because of my experience during Leo,” she shared.

Chinmayi also revealed that dubbing certain emotional scenes in the film deeply affected her personally.

“I remember crying buckets while dubbing a couple of scenes in the film. It felt like everything from my past was replaying on the big screen,” she wrote.

Thanking the filmmaker for the opportunity, Chinmayi added, “I am grateful for the opportunity. Thank you for letting me dub for Trisha.”

She also expressed hope that Karuppu would help her continue working in the Tamil industry without fear.

“I hope Karuppu Saami helps me work in my home industry without fear and without constantly worrying about what comes next. May God help unban me and others who have been unable to work for years,” she stated.

Chinmayi’s dubbing work has remained controversial ever since she was removed from the Tamil Dubbing Union in 2018 after speaking out during the #MeToo movement and accusing union president Radha Ravi of sexual harassment.

Her return as Trisha’s dubbing voice in Leo became a major talking point in 2023. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj and producer Lalit Kumar reportedly brought her on board despite the ban for the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada versions of the film.

Karuppu is written and directed by RJ Balaji. Apart from Suriya and Trisha, the film also stars Indrans, Natty, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha and Supreeth Reddy in important roles. The film’s music has been composed by Sai Abhyankkar.
