Supreme Court judge Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra on Thursday recused himself from hearing Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez’s plea challenging a Delhi court order that framed charges against her in a ₹200-crore money laundering case.
At the outset, a partial working day bench comprising Justices Mishra and Atul S Chandurkar informed the parties that the matter would be listed before another bench. Justice Mishra explained that there was a conflict of interest, noting that in one of the connected matters, his son had appeared on the government side.
“As there is some difficulty, the matter will be referred to another bench,” Justice Mishra observed, adding that it would be posted for hearing on June 25 before a different bench.
The case relates to a Delhi court order dated May 30, which directed framing of charges against Jacqueline Fernandez, alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekar, and several others in the money laundering case. The trial court has also ordered charges under multiple provisions, including the stringent MCOCA, in a related case investigated by the city police’s special cell.
Jacqueline Fernandez had approached the Supreme Court challenging the lower court’s order. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged in its supplementary chargesheet that she was in contact with Sukesh Chandrashekar and had received expensive gifts through his associate Pinky Irani.
According to investigators, Chandrashekar allegedly operated an organised criminal network from jail by impersonating senior government officials, including those from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Law and Justice. He is also accused of using spoofed calls, encrypted apps, and fake identities to defraud complainant Aditi Singh and her family of large sums of money.
