Ellamma Casting Buzz: Mrunal Thakur in Talks?

In Telugu cinema, there was a time when working with star heroes was considered the primary goal for heroines. Film choices were often driven by hero market value, opening strength, and fan base. However, the industry trend is gradually shifting. Today, factors like story strength, director’s vision, remuneration, and content quality are becoming more important than just the hero’s image.

Against this changing backdrop, an interesting discussion has emerged around the upcoming film Ellamma. According to industry buzz, director Venu Yeldandi is planning this project on a strong emotional backdrop, and actress Mrunal Thakur has reportedly been approached for the female lead role.

Adding more curiosity to the project is the speculation that music composer Devi Sri Prasad may also be making his acting debut as the male lead. This unusual combination has already made the film a hot topic in the industry.

Usually, top heroines hesitate to work with debut or non-traditional heroes due to career risk factors. However, in the case of Ellamma, the discussion is completely different. Here, the focus appears to be shifting from star power to story strength and character depth.

Director Venu Yeldandi, who earned wide appreciation for his emotional storytelling in Balagam, is said to have developed a powerful script for this project as well. Reports suggest that the female lead role is author-backed and carries significant emotional weight, making it one of the strongest characters in the film.

Mrunal Thakur, who gained strong recognition in Telugu cinema after Sita Ramam, has been consciously choosing performance-oriented roles. She is believed to be more interested in characters that offer emotional depth rather than just glamour-driven appearances. This makes her a strong fit for the role in Ellamma, according to industry talk.

Producer Dil Raju is also said to be taking a strategic approach with this project. Initially, the film was planned with a different casting lineup, but changes reportedly occurred after scheduling shifts and project exits. Now, the focus is on building the film purely around strong storytelling rather than star combinations.

This project also reflects a larger industry shift. Earlier, big films without star heroes were difficult to imagine. But now, content-driven cinema is gaining strong acceptance. Heroines too are prioritizing roles that offer performance scope, screen importance, and character strength over purely commercial pairings.

If finalized, Ellamma could become a turning point in Mrunal Thakur’s career and another example of how Telugu cinema is evolving towards story-centric filmmaking. Whether she gives her green signal or not, the film has already created strong curiosity in industry circles.
