Social Media Influencer Faces Backlash for Offensive Content

The power of social media has come under renewed scrutiny following a recent incident involving a prominent influencer. This individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, has sparked outrage with remarks and attempts at humor deemed to be grossly offensive and demeaning.

The incident has ignited a firestorm on social media platforms, with several established actors and fellow influencers voicing their disapproval. Many have called for a “cancellation” of the influencer, urging viewers to cease following or engaging with their content. Additionally, calls for legal action have been made, highlighting the potential for such content to cross legal boundaries.

Leading the charge is actor Karthikeya, who took to social media to express his strong condemnation. Citing the specific example that ignited the controversy, Karthikeya decried the influencer’s “insensitive joke” as having crossed a line.

However, Karthikeya’s message extended beyond the singular incident. He identified a concerning trend: the normalization of demeaning content disguised as edgy humor. Karthikeya argued that the pursuit of being seen as “cool” or “new age” should not come at the expense of decency.

The actor emphasized the importance of fostering a positive online environment. He advocated for constructive criticism and healthy humor, while condemning the use of demeaning content that hinders societal progress. Karthikeya concluded with a powerful call to action: to collectively reject such content and instead focus on individual and collective growth.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with online influence. It highlights the need for creators to be mindful of the potential impact of their content, while empowering viewers to make informed choices about who they follow and what content they consume.

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has shared his candid views on what he believes is currently damaging the theatrical movie experience.

The Kaante director said that contrary to popular belief, digital platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, and Hotstar are not the real reason behind audiences drifting away from theatres. Instead, he pointed to weak storytelling, uninspired writing, and predictable performances from stars as the primary factors pushing viewers away from cinema halls.

Sanjay Gupta also highlighted the rising cost of theatre refreshments as another major concern, saying that overpriced food items are discouraging audiences from enjoying a complete theatrical experience with their families.

Taking to his X timeline, he wrote, “YouTube, Netflix, Prime, Hotstar, Satellite TV aren’t killing movies. ₹700 popcorn tubs and ₹450 cold drinks aided by bad stories, lazy writing and stars who stopped surprising us are. The audience hasn’t left. They’ve been abandoned.”

His post quickly sparked debate online, with many users agreeing with his perspective while others added additional reasons such as rising ticket prices, excessive commercialisation, and changing audience preferences. Some also pointed to issues like nepotism, political correctness, and the impact of OTT platforms on theatre culture.

Sanjay Gupta began his career with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994 and went on to direct several notable films including Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Shootout at Wadala, Kaabil, Jazbaa, Zinda, and Mumbai Saga, among others.
