Taapsee Slams Age Bias

Are the same standards applied to actors and actresses in the film industry? Do both enjoy equal opportunities as they grow older? These questions have once again become a topic of discussion following actress Taapsee Pannu’s recent comments on ageism and gender bias in cinema.
Reflecting on her experiences in the industry, Taapsee openly questioned the age-related limitations often imposed on actresses. “People say a heroine over 30 is not suitable for romantic comedies. But actors in their 50s and 60s continue to headline love stories. Why do these rules apply only to women?” she asked.
Her remarks have reignited the debate about the double standards that continue to exist in the entertainment industry. According to Taapsee, actresses are frequently judged based on their age, while male actors often continue to enjoy leading roles regardless of how old they are.
The actress also spoke about the challenges she faced during the early stages of her career in South Indian cinema. She revealed that after acting opposite senior stars, some younger actors were hesitant to work with her, which ultimately cost her certain opportunities.
Taapsee pointed out that in the South film industry, an actress who works with a senior hero is often viewed differently, whereas in Bollywood, starring alongside a major superstar can significantly boost an actress’s career. She cited examples of actresses who have worked with leading stars like Shah Rukh Khan and subsequently gained greater visibility and opportunities.
Speaking about her own journey, Taapsee said she entered the film industry in her early twenties and spent several years establishing herself as an actor. By the time she had built a stable career, she had crossed 30, only to hear that she was “too old” for certain roles.
She argued that age should not be the deciding factor when casting actors, especially when the story and character do not demand such restrictions. In her view, talent and performance should matter far more than a performer’s age.
Taapsee’s comments have once again brought attention to issues of ageism and gender inequality in cinema. While several actresses have spoken about similar experiences in the past, her direct comparison between the opportunities available to male and female actors has sparked fresh conversations within the industry.
As discussions around female representation continue to evolve, many believe the focus should shift from age to ability, ensuring that performers are judged by their talent rather than arbitrary industry norms.
