The BJP led union government, which is still facing the wrath of the controversial farm bills has brought another controversial bill. This time, the new bill is connected with the Indian film industry.
The new Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2021 which bats for the amendments to the Cinematograph Act has attracted negative reactions from celebrities across the country. Bollywood and Kollywood led the celebrities who are opposing the new bill. They have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to scrap the bill.
Several actors and filmmakers from the Indian film fraternity have vented their voices against the proposed bill and opined that the new bill will hinder the freedom of expression of the filmmakers.
While the stars from the neighboring industries are reacting to the burning issue, there is no response from the Tollywood stars. The first reaction from Tollywood in this regard came from Sudheer Babu.
In a thread of tweets, Sudheer Babu opined that cinema is already an easy target and the cinematography bills will make cinema even a much easier target. Calling freedom of expression a constitutional right, Sudheer Babu said we should not be deprived of it.
The Baaghi actor Sudheer Babu even took a dig at the current politics and summarised Indian politics in three dimensions- Religion vs Religion, Caste vs Caste, Region vs Region. He also opined that if the politicians are bound to accountability, criminal cases would be filed against half of the politicians.
The Prema Katha Chitram actor Sudheer Babu had requested the government to think again about the new cinematography bill saying that cinema is currently going through a lot of processes under the Central Board of Film Certification(CBFC).
‘While cinema is already an easy target, the #Cinematographbill makes it much easier to target. We should not be deprived of a constitutional right called freedom of expression. We don’t want an atmosphere of fear. What’s the use of having a CBFC if there’s a concept of re-censor?,’ Sudheer Babu tweeted.
Under the proposed draft Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2021, the central government possesses the right to cancel the film’s cursor certificate issued by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The bill also gives power to the union government to remove a film from the theatres.
