Peddi Release Faces Uncertainty Amid Theatre Row

The growing controversy surrounding the implementation of the percentage system in single-screen theatres is now exposing deeper issues within the Telugu film industry.
After members of the Active Producers Guild recently addressed the media and explained their position, the seriousness and complexity of the matter became more evident. Their comments have now sparked fresh concerns over the smooth release of Peddi.
Industry observers believe a film like Peddi heavily depends on strong support from single-screen theatres for a wide and successful release. However, the recent press meet by exhibitors highlighted the influence and control they hold over a large number of these theatres.
At a time like this, the exhibitors’ warning that they may shut down single-screen theatres from next month has become a major concern for the film’s producers and distributors.
Producer Y. Ravi Shankar also voiced his worries over the situation. He stated that the makers have invested heavily in the project and would face serious setbacks if exhibitors create obstacles at this crucial stage.
Ravi Shankar further indicated that if the issue is not resolved amicably and exhibitors continue with a rigid stand, the matter could eventually be brought to the attention of Chiranjeevi for intervention.
The Telugu film industry has already been going through a dull phase after the festive season, with very few notable box-office successes. In such a scenario, many feel that continued disagreements between producers and exhibitors over the percentage system could hurt the industry further and result in missed revenue opportunities for everyone involved.
Both the exhibitors’ committee and producers’ committee are expected to hold another round of discussions tomorrow. The industry is now closely watching to see whether the two sides can arrive at a practical solution and avoid further disruption.
