During a heated interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, US President Donald Trump abruptly ended the conversation after a tense exchange with anchor Kristen Welker over his claims regarding alleged election irregularities.
The discussion reportedly grew more confrontational when Welker repeatedly asked Trump to provide evidence supporting his allegations that US elections, including vote counting in California, had been “rigged.” Trump responded by insisting that there was “tremendous evidence,” while rejecting the suggestion that no proof had been presented.
The interview initially covered multiple topics, including efforts to end the war in Iran and Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponisation” initiative, which he said would compensate individuals who believed they were unfairly targeted by previous political administrations. However, the conversation quickly shifted toward election-related accusations, leading to a more combative tone.
Trump criticized media organizations, election officials, and former President Joe Biden, accusing them of misconduct and bias. When Welker clarified that California’s slower vote-counting process is due to mail-in ballots arriving after election day, Trump dismissed the explanation and suggested wrongdoing without providing evidence.
As the exchange intensified, Trump questioned the integrity of election procedures in California and accused state officials and media outlets of dishonesty. Welker pushed back, stating that election authorities had acknowledged the delays and were working to improve the process.
The situation escalated further when Trump directly criticized the interviewer and major news networks, at one point calling them “crooked” and accusing them of biased reporting. He also questioned Welker’s professionalism, leading to an increasingly strained interaction.
Moments later, Trump ended the interview himself, removed his microphone, and walked out after stating that he had “had enough,” adding that he had already given sufficient time for the discussion. He also criticized what he described as a “dishonest press” and said such conditions prevent the country from being “great.”
The incident follows a separate recent exchange in which Trump made critical remarks about CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins during a public interaction, further highlighting ongoing tensions between the former president and members of the media.
