Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in President Donald Trump’s administration, citing a deeply personal reason — her husband’s recent cancer diagnosis.

In a resignation letter dated May 22, 2026, addressed to President Donald Trump, Gabbard stated that her husband, Abraham Williams, has been diagnosed with an “extremely rare form of bone cancer.” She said she is stepping down to focus on supporting him through this critical health battle. Her resignation is set to take effect on June 30, 2026.

The letter, marked “Unclassified” and issued under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, also expressed gratitude to Trump for the opportunity to lead the US intelligence community over the past year and a half.

Gabbard described her husband as her “rock” throughout her personal and professional journey, including military service and political life. She added that she could not, in good conscience, continue in such a demanding role while her husband faces serious health challenges.

During her tenure at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), Gabbard highlighted efforts aimed at improving transparency and restoring trust within the intelligence community. She also assured a smooth and orderly transition before her departure.

Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii who later joined the Republican Party and supported Trump in the 2024 election, was appointed DNI in February 2025 after Senate confirmation.

Her tenure was often marked by policy debates and controversies, particularly regarding Iran and US intelligence assessments. Reports in recent months also indicated internal tensions within the administration over her role in national security decisions.
