Around 30 individuals from India, found to be living in the United States illegally and working as commercial truck drivers, have been arrested as part of a federal enforcement operation and are set to be deported.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement that during the week of May 11–15, Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Sector in Arizona detained 52 individuals under “Operation Checkmate” for being in the country illegally. Among them, 36 were found operating semi-trucks without valid legal status.

Out of those 36 illegal truck drivers, 30 were from India, while the remaining were from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. Authorities said the individuals possessed commercial driving licenses issued from states including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia, while some did not hold any valid license at all. Officials also noted that many had employment authorization documents issued during the Joe Biden administration, which are now considered expired or invalid.

All detainees have been processed under federal law and are expected to be deported.

“Operation Checkmate” is aimed at improving road safety by identifying and arresting individuals illegally operating commercial vehicles in the US. According to Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin Caudle of the Yuma Sector, the operation is part of ongoing efforts to prevent unsafe drivers from causing serious accidents on American roads.

The Department of Transportation has also taken steps under the Donald Trump administration framework to prevent unqualified foreign nationals from obtaining commercial driving licenses for trucks and buses.

In recent months, several cases involving Indian-origin truck drivers have also been reported in connection with fatal road accidents in the United States.
