US Used Over 200 THAAD Interceptors Defending Israel During Iran Conflict

The United States reportedly used more than 200 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors to help defend Israel during the recently paused conflict with Iran, according to a report by The Washington Post citing US officials.

The report stated that the heavy deployment consumed nearly half of the Pentagon’s total THAAD interceptor inventory. In addition to THAAD systems, the US military also launched more than 100 Standard Missile-3 and Standard Missile-6 interceptors from naval vessels positioned in the eastern Mediterranean region.

In comparison, Israel reportedly used fewer than 100 Arrow interceptors and around 90 David’s Sling interceptors during the conflict. Some of those systems were also deployed against lower-level threats launched by Iran-backed groups operating in Yemen and Lebanon.

According to the report, the conflict began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched coordinated attacks targeting Iran’s military infrastructure, naval assets, and air force facilities. The operations reportedly resulted in the elimination of several top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The hostilities later escalated with Iranian strikes targeting US allies across West Asia before a ceasefire came into effect on April 8. Since then, Washington and Tehran have reportedly been engaged in discussions aimed at reaching a broader peace agreement and easing decades-long tensions.

A US administration official quoted in the report claimed that American forces intercepted nearly twice as many Iranian missiles as Israel did during the conflict. The official also warned that if fighting resumes, as recently suggested by Donald Trump, the US may be required to deploy even more interceptors because some Israeli missile defence batteries are currently undergoing maintenance.

The Pentagon, however, defended the overall balance of military involvement between the two allies. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that ballistic missile interceptors represent only one component of a much broader layered defence network that includes fighter aircraft, counter-drone systems, and multiple advanced air defence technologies.

Israeli officials also maintained that both countries coordinated their operations closely throughout the conflict. The Israeli Embassy in Washington described the joint military actions as highly integrated efforts carried out for the security interests of both nations and their regional allies.

The report ultimately highlights the enormous scale of missile defence resources used during the conflict, even as the ceasefire continues to hold and diplomatic negotiations between the US and Iran remain ongoing.
