Vijayasai Reddy in RS Contest Buzz

The political landscape surrounding the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand has taken an interesting turn, with former YSR Congress Party leader and ex-Rajya Sabha MP V. Vijayasai Reddy reportedly emerging as one of the names in contention.

According to sources, Sai Reddy, along with industrialist and former YSRCP MP Parimal Nathwani and BJP spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh, has collected nomination papers from the Speaker’s office. This development has added fresh intrigue to the elections, with speculation that it could be part of a broader political strategy involving cross-voting dynamics.

The 81-member Jharkhand Assembly currently comprises 56 MLAs from the INDIA bloc, 24 from the NDA, and one Independent. With two Rajya Sabha seats up for election, a candidate requires at least 28 votes to win.

Several candidates have filed nominations, including JMM nominee Baijnath Ram and Congress candidate Pranav Jha, alongside Independent entrants such as Sai Reddy, Gaurav Vallabh, and Parimal Nathwani.

On paper, the INDIA bloc appears comfortably placed to win both seats. However, internal differences between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress over seat-sharing have opened the door to speculation about possible cross-voting and strategic vote transfers.

Political observers suggest that Baijnath Ram is likely to secure one seat without much difficulty, while the contest for the second seat is expected to be closely contested. The preferential voting system used in Rajya Sabha elections could play a decisive role in determining the outcome.

Under possible vote-transfer scenarios, initial calculations suggest a tightly contested race between Congress nominee Pranav Jha, BJP-backed Gaurav Vallabh, and Independents Parimal Nathwani and Vijayasai Reddy. In such a situation, second and subsequent preference votes could become crucial in deciding the winner once lower-ranked candidates are eliminated.

Reports also indicate that BJP legislators may have signed nomination papers without officially declaring a party-backed candidate, further adding to the uncertainty. There are also unverified claims that signatures were collected on blank nomination forms, though no official confirmation has been made.

Questions are also being raised about Vijayasai Reddy’s participation, given his earlier statement that he had stepped away from active politics. Under election rules, Independent candidates require the backing of at least 10 MLAs as proposers, prompting speculation over potential support dynamics.

As the nomination deadline approaches, uncertainty continues over the final list of candidates and possible alliances. Political circles believe that the BJP may eventually extend support to one of the Independent candidates, which could significantly influence the final outcome despite the INDIA bloc’s numerical advantage.
