YSRCP’s Opposition Role, Jagan’s Involvement and Impact

February 1, 2025

As the NDA government in the state marks seven months in power, Chandrababu Naidu’s government has been evaluating public satisfaction with its policies, dividing the feedback into categories such as schemes, events, and development. On the other hand, the YSRCP, having completed its own seven months as the opposition, is also being assessed. However, one question remains: how effective has the YSRCP been during this period?

During these seven months, the opposition party, particularly under the leadership of Jagan, has failed to make a significant impact. A major issue has been the absence of YSRCP leaders in the Assembly, which has led to a situation where even TDP leaders have hardly discussed the role of the opposition party. In fact, the discourse about the YSRCP seems to center entirely around Jagan. When he is present, the party sees activity and engagement, but when he’s absent, the party goes silent. This was clearly seen when Jagan traveled to London, and for a period, no substantial actions or statements were made by the party.

Recently, Jagan did announce plans for protests demanding the reimbursement of students’ fees starting from February 5. However, there are doubts about whether Jagan himself will participate in these protests. Historically, in previous protests, he delegated the responsibility to his leaders and activists while remaining either in Tadepalli or Bengaluru. This lack of direct involvement in such movements has raised questions about Jagan’s commitment as an opposition leader.

Many argue that Jagan has yet to meet the expectations of the public as a leader of the opposition. His leadership in the coming months will be closely observed, and it will largely depend on the actions he takes, the direction he chooses, and whether he chooses to step into the field himself. Simply directing leaders and activists will not suffice. If Jagan personally leads the efforts, it would undoubtedly garner more attention. Otherwise, relying on leaders alone may not create the desired impact, as analysts suggest.

The future of the YSRCP’s role in the opposition remains uncertain, but it will depend on how actively Jagan decides to engage with the public and the issues facing the state.
