IMAX Returns to Hyderabad Ahead of Rajamouli’s Varanasi Release

Director S. S. Rajamouli’s long-standing wish has finally come true. During the launch event of the Varanasi glimpse, the filmmaker had expressed his desire to see an IMAX screen in Hyderabad, pointing out that despite Tollywood producing some of India’s biggest cinematic spectacles, the city lacked a premium large-format theatre.

Now, ahead of Varanasi’s release, that vision is turning into reality. As per the latest announcement, IMAX is set to make a grand return to Hyderabad through a collaboration between AMB Cinemas and Asian Cinemas.

This development is being seen as a major milestone for Telugu cinema, which has increasingly embraced large-scale, visually ambitious filmmaking. The timing is especially significant for Varanasi, Rajamouli’s globe-trotting adventure starring Mahesh Babu, which is being mounted on a massive scale and is expected to be one of Indian cinema’s biggest visual spectacles. An IMAX release will allow audiences to experience the film in its full intended grandeur.

The impact of this move goes beyond just one film. Several upcoming big-budget projects such as Raaka, Kalki 2, and the much-discussed God of War adaptation—if it materializes—could also benefit from the availability of IMAX screens in the Telugu states.

For years, Telugu audiences had to travel outside the state to experience true IMAX viewing. With Hyderabad now joining the global IMAX network, Tollywood filmmakers finally have a powerful platform to showcase their grand visions on the biggest possible screen.
