Karthik Subbaraj Turns Actor in Pocket Novel

The trend of star directors stepping into acting roles is steadily growing in South Indian cinema, marking a notable shift in the industry’s creative landscape.
Earlier, such transitions were seen as unusual, but now several acclaimed filmmakers are successfully reinventing themselves as actors.
One of the earliest examples is S. J. Suryah, known for his work in films like Kushi. He has now fully transformed into a sought-after character actor, often portraying intense villain roles and emerging as one of the highest-paid supporting actors in the industry.
Similarly, Gautham Vasudev Menon, who directed acclaimed films such as Gharshana and Ye Maaya Chesave, has also expanded his presence on screen. In recent years, he has been seen frequently in acting roles while continuing to balance occasional directorial work.
Now, another prominent filmmaker appears to be following the same path — Karthik Subbaraj, known for films like Pizza, Jigarthanda, Mahaan, and Petta. After the underwhelming response to his recent collaboration with Suriya in Retro, reports suggest that he has been facing delays in locking his next big project.
Amid this uncertainty, Karthik Subbaraj is reportedly preparing for his acting debut in the upcoming film Pocket Novel, directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, best known for Super Deluxe. The film also reunites Kumararaja with Vijay Sethupathi, raising expectations significantly among audiences.
With nearly half of the shoot already completed, Pocket Novel is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Tamil projects in recent times.
It now remains to be seen how Karthik Subbaraj performs in his new on-screen avatar and whether this marks the beginning of a new phase in his career.
