Kamal Haasan Demands 8-Week OTT Window From CM Vijay

Veteran actor and politician Kamal Haasan recently met Vijay following his swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and submitted a set of key proposals aimed at strengthening the Tamil film industry.
One of the major demands raised by Haasan was the implementation of a mandatory 8-week OTT release window for all films released in Tamil Nadu. According to the actor, such a move would provide much-needed support to theatre owners and distributors struggling to survive in the increasingly competitive entertainment market.
Taking to X, Haasan shared details of the six demands he presented to the Chief Minister for the welfare and long-term growth of Tamil cinema.
The proposals included the launch of a Tamil Nadu government-owned OTT platform that would exclusively stream Tamil films, independent movies and documentaries, giving regional content creators a dedicated space to reach audiences.
He also urged the government to abolish the 4% local body entertainment tax imposed on films, stating that the move would reduce financial pressure on the industry.
Another key demand was the creation of a dedicated anti-piracy division within the Tamil Nadu Police Cyber Crime Department. Haasan stressed the need for a strong enforcement mechanism with powers to take down pirated content in real time to protect the interests of filmmakers and producers.
The actor further requested permission for five shows per day for all films across theatres in Tamil Nadu, saying it would improve revenue generation and help revive the exhibition sector.
Among the most discussed proposals was the demand for a compulsory 8-week OTT window before films are made available on streaming platforms. Haasan argued that this buffer period is essential for theatres and distributors to recover investments and sustain their businesses.
He also proposed a 10% production incentive scheme for Indian films that complete more than 50% of their shooting in Tamil Nadu. According to him, the incentive would help restore Tamil Nadu’s status as one of India’s leading film production hubs.
Sharing details about the meeting, Haasan wrote that he personally congratulated Chief Minister Vijay and expressed confidence in his vision for the state.
“Today, I met the Honorable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Brother Vijay and conveyed my best wishes. He enthusiastically shared many dreams for the betterment of Tamil Nadu. The humility and affection he showed filled me with pride,” Haasan posted.
Earlier, after Vijay officially took oath as the Chief Minister on May 10, Kamal Haasan had also shared a heartfelt congratulatory note on social media, expressing hope that Tamil Nadu would prosper under Vijay’s leadership.
