₹15,000 Cr AMCA Defence Hub in Puttaparthi Sparks Political Debate

The foundation stone for the ₹15,000-crore AMCA defence hub in Puttaparthi was recently laid by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, marking a major milestone in India’s defence aerospace sector.

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) flight testing and integration complex is a crucial part of India’s fifth-generation stealth fighter programme. Interestingly, the project had also been strongly pursued by the previous Tamil Nadu government, which had proposed Hosur as the preferred location. Reports suggest that former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin had even offered land and infrastructure support, including 100 acres and access to the Hosur airport runway, to attract the project.

Following the announcement of the project moving to Andhra Pradesh, political debates have intensified, with DMK leaders criticising the shift and targeting the new Tamil Nadu political leadership. However, the situation has also sparked broader discussions on how such large-scale defence projects are finalized, as decisions of this magnitude involve long-term planning, central approvals, and multi-layered evaluations rather than sudden political changes.

Amid this, some voices have pointed out that it is unfair to hold the newly formed Tamil Nadu leadership responsible for the project’s relocation, as such decisions are typically the result of processes initiated much earlier.

Interestingly, a similar case was seen earlier when South Korean company Hwaseung Enterprises shifted a ₹1,720-crore footwear manufacturing project from Tamil Nadu to Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh, highlighting that investment relocations are not uncommon in competitive industrial policy environments.

Overall, the AMCA hub development continues to be viewed as a major boost for Andhra Pradesh’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, while also triggering renewed political debate between the states.
