Amazon has expanded its Echo lineup with two next-generation devices — the Echo Dot Max and the Echo Show — bringing notable upgrades in design, sound quality and smart home capabilities. We recently spent over a week with the new Echo Dot Max, which Amazon positions as the most powerful speaker in its current Echo range.
Priced at Rs 10,999, the Echo Dot Max introduces a premium 3D-knit fabric finish, redesigned controls, Dolby Atmos-powered spatial audio, Automatic Room Adaptation and Omnisense technology, all aimed at delivering a more immersive and intelligent smart speaker experience.
The Echo Dot Max retains the familiar spherical form factor but gets a refined look with a premium fabric exterior and a redesigned control panel. Measuring 10.9 cm wide and 9.9 cm tall and weighing just over 500 grams, the speaker remains compact enough to fit seamlessly into any room.
It is available in three colours — Graphite, Glacier White and Amethyst. While the first two are conventional choices, the Amethyst variant stands out with its elegant purple shade, adding a touch of personality and helping the speaker blend into modern interiors.
One noticeable change is the relocation of the control panel from the top to the front, arranged in a circular layout. The volume and mute buttons are easy to access, though pressing them requires holding the speaker steady as it tends to move slightly.
In addition to physical controls, the Echo Dot Max supports tap gestures for pausing music and dismissing alarms or calls. Voice commands through Alexa continue to offer the most convenient way to interact with the device. The rear panel houses only the power port for the bundled 22W adapter, with Amazon opting to drop the 3.5mm audio jack.
The biggest upgrade comes in the sound department. The Echo Dot Max features a dual-speaker system consisting of a 0.8-inch tweeter for vocals and high frequencies, paired with a 2.5-inch woofer that delivers deeper bass.
The combination results in noticeably richer and more immersive sound compared to previous Echo models. Music sounds crisp, vocals are clear and bass response is more pronounced, allowing the speaker to comfortably fill medium-sized rooms.
Another useful addition is Automatic Room Adaptation, which analyses the acoustics of the room and fine-tunes the sound accordingly. Users can also customise audio settings through EQ controls available in the Alexa app.
Voice recognition has also seen improvements. Alexa responds quickly even when music is playing loudly or when commands are issued from across the room. It also handles different accents and speech patterns more accurately.
Like previous Echo devices, the speaker can answer questions, provide weather updates, set alarms and reminders, control smart home devices and stream music. However, the AI-powered Alexa+ experience is not yet available in India, meaning users won’t get advanced chatbot-like interactions seen in some global markets.
The Echo Dot Max is powered by Amazon’s AZ3 chip with an AI accelerator and introduces Omnisense technology. The built-in sensors can detect motion, ambient light and temperature, enabling automation of connected smart home devices based on environmental conditions.
The speaker also supports Home Theatre Mode when paired with compatible Fire TV devices, although this feature was not tested during our review.
The Echo Dot Max brings meaningful improvements in areas that matter most — audio quality, voice recognition and smart home automation. At Rs 10,999, it sits firmly in the premium smart speaker segment and may not feel like a revolutionary upgrade, especially with Alexa+ still absent in India.
However, for users seeking better sound and a more capable smart home hub, the Echo Dot Max delivers a polished experience and represents a clear step forward over previous Echo speakers.
