Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has spoken candidly about his company’s growing rivalry with OpenAI, saying he is comfortable with the way the competition is evolving. In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s The Circuit with Emily Chang, Amodei also revisited the reasons behind his departure from OpenAI, emphasizing concerns related to AI safety, governance, and organizational direction.
Explaining his decision to leave OpenAI and co-found Anthropic, Amodei said that disagreements over vision and trust ultimately made the split inevitable.
“At the end of the day, why argue with someone when you don’t have the same vision and you don’t trust them,” he said. “The way to resolve it is you go off and do your thing, they go off and do their thing. And I am completely at peace with the idea that we’re doing things our way and they’re doing things their way.”
Amodei stressed that the long-term success of both companies will be determined by their performance rather than past disagreements.
“We’ll see who wins in the market and we’ll see who wins in the court of public opinion,” he said, adding that results matter more than the drama surrounding executive departures.
His comments have gained renewed attention following a recent New Yorker article in which Amodei discussed internal challenges at OpenAI, including concerns about leadership, trust, and decision-making. As Anthropic and OpenAI continue to compete for talent, customers, funding, and technological leadership, the rivalry between the two AI firms has become increasingly visible.
Amodei also recalled an awkward moment involving OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during the India AI Impact Summit, where the two leaders found themselves seated next to each other on stage.
“Look, I don’t know what to tell you, OK? There was like Narendra Modi up there suddenly telling everyone to hold hands,” Amodei joked while describing the encounter. He further remarked that the event felt “extremely disorganised.”
Despite the competitive tensions, Amodei made it clear that he remains focused on Anthropic’s mission and believes the industry will ultimately judge companies based on their actions, innovations, and impact.
