Anurag Kashyap, known for his bold and unconventional filmmaking style, is now facing legal trouble after a court in Surat reportedly allowed criminal proceedings against him over alleged remarks targeting the Brahmin community.
According to reports, a Judicial Magistrate First Class court in Surat, Gujarat, partially accepted a private complaint filed by lawyer and Vishva Hindu Parishad leader Kamlesh Raval. The complaint accused Kashyap of making defamatory remarks against the Brahmin community through a social media post linked to the controversy surrounding the 2015 film Phule.
The issue reportedly began after protests emerged online against the film’s trailer, following which Kashyap shared a social media post on April 16, 2025, that allegedly sparked outrage and drew criticism from several groups.
Reports suggest that the court has now permitted the initiation of criminal proceedings, and legal action against the filmmaker has intensified after repeated summons were allegedly ignored.
The controversy has also triggered strong reactions on social media, with many users debating freedom of expression, accountability, and the responsibilities of public figures. One viral post claimed the court’s action sends a clear message that celebrities and filmmakers cannot insult communities and remain above the law.
Meanwhile, supporters of Kashyap argue that artistic freedom and personal opinions are increasingly coming under scrutiny in politically sensitive matters.
The case is expected to attract significant attention in the coming days as legal proceedings move forward.
