Apple Working on iPhone Theft Detection Feature That Auto-Locks Stolen Devices

Apple is reportedly working on a new iPhone security feature designed to automatically lock a device if it detects that the phone has been stolen or suddenly snatched from the user. According to reports, the company is developing an advanced theft-detection system that can identify suspicious activity using multiple device signals.

The feature is said to function similarly to Google’s Theft Detection Lock available on Android smartphones, which uses on-device AI to recognize snatch-and-run situations and instantly secure the phone to prevent unauthorized access.

Reports suggest that Apple’s system could use data from the iPhone’s accelerometer and motion sensors to identify unusual movement patterns that may indicate theft. Once the system suspects a snatching incident, the iPhone could automatically lock itself to protect user data.

Another important element of the feature may involve integration with the Apple Watch. The system is reportedly being designed to monitor the distance between an iPhone and a paired Apple Watch. If the iPhone suddenly moves far away from the connected smartwatch, it may be treated as an additional sign of possible theft.

The upcoming feature is also expected to work alongside Apple’s existing Stolen Device Protection system. Under this setup, the iPhone can analyse whether it is connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network or located in familiar places such as the user’s home or workplace. If the device is detected in an unfamiliar environment, stricter security protections could automatically activate.

To use Stolen Device Protection, users may need to enable two-factor authentication for their Apple Account and set up security options such as Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode. Features like Significant Locations and Find My iPhone would also need to remain active for the protection system to function properly.

Although Apple has not officially announced a launch date for this feature, reports indicate that the company is actively developing a security system that combines sensor data, location tracking, and Apple Watch connectivity to better protect stolen iPhones and reduce the risk of data theft.
