In a significant development in the case involving the arrest of Bandi Bhageerath, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has invoked additional provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which may attract stringent punishment if the charges are proven in court.
The accused was already booked under multiple sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act along with relevant BNS provisions. Authorities have now added Section 64(2)(m), which pertains to serious sexual offences involving repeated allegations against the same victim.
Officials stated that this provision carries a minimum sentence of 10 years, which may extend up to life imprisonment depending on the court’s findings.
The case was originally registered at Pet Basheerabad Police Station following a complaint from the victim’s family. Based on the seriousness of the allegations, the Telangana government directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team to ensure a detailed probe.
Investigators have since taken the accused into custody and seized his mobile phone for forensic examination. The device has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, where digital evidence such as chats, messages, and media files is being analysed.
SIT officials are also reviewing CCTV footage from relevant locations as part of the ongoing investigation. Police are additionally examining claims regarding the involvement of associates who may have attempted to influence or settle the matter.
Further questioning of individuals linked to the case is expected as the investigation progresses. The accused is currently in judicial custody at Cherlapally Jail, and authorities may seek police custody for further interrogation.
