ChatGPT Returns to WhatsApp

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has reportedly returned to WhatsApp months after its integration was disrupted following changes to Meta’s WhatsApp Business API policy. The chatbot is now said to be available again for users in several regions, including the European Economic Area (EEA) and India.

Earlier this year, Meta updated its WhatsApp Business API guidelines, restricting the use of general-purpose AI chatbots on the platform. The move effectively prevented ChatGPT from operating through WhatsApp, leading to speculation that Meta was prioritizing its own Meta AI assistant within the messaging app.

Now, ChatGPT appears to have made a comeback. OpenAI recently shared on X that the service is once again accessible on WhatsApp in the EEA as part of its efforts to make AI available through the apps people use every day. The company also announced the expansion of ChatGPT to KakaoTalk in South Korea and Viber in select markets.

Users can reportedly access ChatGPT on WhatsApp by messaging the verified 1-800-CHATGPT contact. The chatbot supports text conversations, image uploads, voice notes, image generation, and multilingual interactions, allowing users to access AI assistance directly within the messaging app.

Although the feature has started working for some users, neither Meta nor OpenAI has released a detailed joint announcement regarding the wider rollout.

The return of ChatGPT to WhatsApp is particularly significant for India, one of WhatsApp’s largest markets globally. Many users had relied on ChatGPT within WhatsApp for quick queries, content creation, translations, and everyday assistance before the service was discontinued.

With the chatbot becoming available again, Indian users can once more access AI features without switching to a separate application. Given WhatsApp’s widespread use for personal communication, education, and business, the integration could make AI more accessible and convenient for millions of users across the country.
