Ranveer Singh’s “Dhurandhar” franchise has emerged as a massive box-office phenomenon, with “Dhurandhar” and its sequel “Dhurandhar: Revenge” reportedly crossing over ₹3,000 crore in worldwide collections, setting new benchmarks for Indian cinema.
However, producer Jyoti Deshpande revealed that the journey behind this success was far from easy.
Speaking to ET Digital, she shared that the project faced rising production costs, a major mid-way creative shift, and a bold financial structure involving Ranveer Singh and director Aditya Dhar.
Instead of charging heavy upfront fees, both Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar reportedly opted for lower fixed payments combined with backend profit-sharing agreements, allowing them to benefit directly from the film’s success. “Ranveer came with a smaller fixed fee and a backend deal, and therefore benefited from that arrangement. The same was true for Aditya,” Deshpande explained.
She also admitted that the film’s budget nearly doubled from its original estimate. “We went all in on Dhurandhar. It ended up costing almost twice what we initially planned,” she said, adding that despite the risk, the outcome proved rewarding.
Interestingly, “Dhurandhar” was initially conceived as a single film, but after the first shooting schedule, the team realised the scale was far larger than expected. The footage convinced the makers to expand it into a two-part franchise.
Deshpande further revealed that the story, set in Pakistan and revolving around the concept of the “deep state,” stood out for its unique and challenging narrative. The film’s structure was also inspired by global franchises like “Bond” and “Mission: Impossible,” aiming for a more immersive, chapter-based storytelling style.
While appearing as a high-octane gangster action drama, she described the film as emotionally strong and patriotic at its core, which ultimately justified the massive investment.
From budget risks to record-breaking success, “Dhurandhar” has proven that bold decisions in filmmaking can lead to historic rewards.
