The Telugu states are currently witnessing a dry spell at the ticket windows, with very few films managing to perform strongly at the box office. Interestingly, the usual trend—where films with negative or mixed reviews struggle commercially—seems to be shifting in recent times.
Suriya’s Karuppu, which opened to mixed responses, was initially expected to underperform. However, the film surprised trade analysts by gradually picking up momentum and emerging as a decent hit, driven largely by the actor’s star power and impactful moments.
Now, similar expectations are being discussed around Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3, which hit the screens on Thursday. Despite receiving mixed to negative reviews across languages, the film has registered a solid opening, particularly in the Telugu and Malayalam markets. With the weekend approaching, trade circles are hopeful that family audiences will turn out in larger numbers, potentially boosting collections further.
In the case of Karuppu, Suriya’s strong fan base and commercial elements played a key role in the film’s performance. However, Drishyam 3 follows a completely different narrative style, being more rooted in drama and emotion rather than mass appeal.
Because of this, the film’s trajectory may not exactly mirror Karuppu. While it may strongly connect with family audiences and viewers who prefer Malayalam-style storytelling, its reach among the broader mass audience could be comparatively limited. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the film holds up in the coming days, especially after the weekend run.
