YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has sought to frame the 2029 Andhra Pradesh Assembly election as a direct choice between Amaravati and Mavigun. He recently stated that those who support Mavigun should vote for the YSR Congress, while those who believe Amaravati should remain the state’s capital can back the TDP.
The statement has quickly become a major topic of political discussion, with many viewing it as an attempt to shape the narrative for the 2029 elections. In response, several media platforms have begun conducting public opinion surveys and street interviews to gauge people’s views on the Amaravati-versus-Mavigun debate.
During one such YouTube interaction, a media representative came across former Tirupati MP and ex-YSR Congress leader Sivaprasad, who offered a candid assessment of Jagan’s approach.
Sivaprasad said he firmly supports Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh and criticized Jagan for repeatedly introducing new capital proposals that, in his view, only create confusion among the public.
“As someone who worked very closely with Jagan for 12 years, I can say he believes only in what he personally likes. He doesn’t bother much about public opinion or established practices followed elsewhere in the country. Once he makes up his mind, there is very little room for change. If the intention is to ensure balanced regional development, there are several practical ways to achieve it instead of announcing new capital proposals that leave people confused,” Sivaprasad remarked.
His comments have drawn attention because they come from a leader who spent over a decade in close political association with Jagan before parting ways. Political observers believe such criticism from a former insider could carry more weight than attacks from opposition parties.
The Amaravati-versus-Mavigun debate is now emerging as one of the key political issues in Andhra Pradesh, and reactions from former YSR Congress leaders as well as the public are likely to influence how the narrative evolves in the run-up to the 2029 elections.
