Google has taken its popular song recognition feature on Pixel smartphones a step further by introducing a dedicated app called Now Playing. The new app aims to make music discovery quicker, smarter, and more convenient for users.
Previously, Pixel phones offered background music recognition through Android’s System Intelligence feature, which silently detected songs playing nearby. With the arrival of the standalone Now Playing app, the experience has become more streamlined and user-friendly.
One of the biggest highlights of the app is its ability to recognise songs even without an internet connection. Unlike many cloud-based music recognition services, the entire process happens directly on the device itself. This means audio data is not sent to external servers, making the feature not only faster but also more privacy-focused.
The app continuously listens for music playing nearby and can instantly identify tracks, even from very short audio clips. In many cases, the recognised song title appears directly on the lock screen before the user even unlocks the phone.
Another major addition is its seamless integration with Spotify. Once a song is identified, users can instantly open it on Spotify through the “Listen on Spotify” option. This eliminates the hassle of manually searching for tracks later.
The app also allows users to save recognised songs directly to their liked songs list, explore artists, and add albums or tracks to playlists with minimal effort.
Additionally, the History feature stores previously identified songs, allowing users to revisit tracks they discovered earlier, manage their music discoveries, and save favourites easily.
While the app shares similarities with popular music recognition services like Shazam, Google’s on-device processing gives it a significant advantage in terms of speed, privacy, and offline functionality.
With the launch of Now Playing, Google appears to be making song discovery on Pixel devices more intelligent, effortless, and deeply integrated into everyday smartphone usage.
