Google Layoffs Hit Cloud, Cybersecurity Teams

Google Reportedly Cuts Roles in Cloud and Cybersecurity Teams Amid Wider Tech Layoffs Google has reportedly joined the growing list of technology companies reducing headcount in 2026, with layoffs affecting parts of its Google Cloud division over the past two weeks.

According to reports, the cuts impacted employees in cybersecurity-focused teams, including the Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) and Mandiant. Several employees appeared to confirm the layoffs on LinkedIn. Andrew Kopcienski, a Principal Intelligence Analyst, wrote in a post, “I was laid off last night, alongside a lot of other great folks at Google Threat Intelligence Group.” Google has not officially confirmed the scale of the workforce reduction,

so the exact number of affected employees remains unclear. GTIG is considered one of Google’s prominent cybersecurity teams, known for researching cyber threats, hacker activity, nation-state attacks, and other digital security risks. Its reports are widely referenced by governments, businesses, and cybersecurity professionals. The layoffs also reportedly affected employees at Mandiant, the cybersecurity firm acquired by Google in 2022, as well as workers in other parts of the broader Google Cloud organization.

A Google spokesperson told Business Insider that the company “regularly evaluate[s] our internal structures to ensure we are best positioned to meet the evolving demands of our customers and the industry.” The reported cuts come amid a difficult year for tech employees globally. Many companies have continued restructuring efforts due to cost pressures, organisational streamlining, and shifts toward AI-focused operations.

Earlier this year, Meta reportedly cut around 8,000 jobs worldwide while reallocating more than 7,000 employees to AI-related projects. Layoff tracking data cited in reports indicates that, as of June 5, over 116,000 tech workers had been affected across more than 160 companies in 2026.

Companies such as Uber and GitLab have also announced workforce reductions in recent months, underscoring the broader restructuring trend across the technology sector.
