A major financial fraud case involving an Indian-origin individual in the United States has come to light, with federal authorities arresting a 44-year-old financier accused of orchestrating a massive scam.

Mahender Makhijani, an Indian-born U.S. Green Card holder, was taken into custody at his luxury mansion in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach, California. He faces serious federal charges for allegedly defrauding a federally insured bank of nearly $100 million (around ₹954 crore) through an elaborate financial scheme.

According to investigators, Makhijani led an extravagant lifestyle, frequently travelling on private jets and owning multiple luxury properties across the world. He is now facing the possibility of up to 30 years in federal prison if convicted on all charges.

Court documents reveal that he operated a Newport Beach-based company, Cantor Group V LLC, which secured a substantial line of credit from a federally insured bank. The funds were reportedly intended for real estate investments and loan financing.

However, between September 2024 and April 2025, prosecutors allege that Makhijani and an associate manipulated title insurance records and digital metadata. The funds were then allegedly routed through shell companies and layered transactions to conceal the movement of money.

Authorities further claim that the accused spent millions on a lavish lifestyle, including private jets, luxury vehicles such as a Bentley, Porsche, and Mercedes G-Wagon, and maintained two high-end mansions in an upscale California neighborhood.

Court filings also allege that he hosted private parties involving illegal activities, attended by associates and bank employees, and later used compromising situations to exert pressure on individuals. Additionally, he is accused of deploying armed associates to take control of certain restaurants and hotels in Southern California.

The investigation is ongoing, and federal prosecutors say more details are expected to emerge as the case develops.
