Japan has revised its visa fees for travellers worldwide with effect from July 1, 2026, marking its first major fee revision in several years. While the updated fee structure has resulted in a significant increase for most foreign nationals, there is good news for Indian travellers. The Embassy of Japan in India has confirmed that Indian passport holders will continue to enjoy the long-standing concessional visa fee of ₹500 for both single-entry and multiple-entry visas.
Under the revised fee structure, applicants from most other countries will now have to pay ₹8,650 for a single-entry visa and ₹17,350 for multiple-entry or double-entry visas when applying in India. In contrast, the visa fee for Indian citizens remains unchanged at just ₹500, making Japan one of the most affordable international destinations for Indian travellers. Applicable VFS service charges will continue to be levied separately for all applicants.
Japan has also introduced an important policy change by discontinuing its separate transit visa category for all nationalities. Travellers who previously relied on transit visas while passing through Japan will now need to apply for the appropriate short-term stay visa based on the purpose of their visit.
Indian applicants must submit their visa applications through authorized VFS centres. The Embassy recommends applying within three months of the intended travel date, as applications submitted earlier than this period will not be accepted. In addition, Japan’s eVisa system, introduced for Indian travellers in April 2024, continues to be available for eligible short-term visits, depending on the visa category and purpose of travel.
Applicants are generally required to submit a valid Indian passport, a completed visa application form, a recent passport-sized photograph, confirmed flight bookings, accommodation details, financial documents, and a detailed travel itinerary. However, the exact documentation may vary depending on the purpose of travel, such as tourism, business, visiting family or friends, attending conferences, or pursuing studies.
For tourist visas, applicants must clearly demonstrate the purpose of their visit and provide proof of sufficient financial resources to cover their stay. Eligible Indian citizens can also apply for multiple-entry visas, subject to the Embassy’s guidelines and approval process.
