TVK supremo and newly sworn-in Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay appears determined to make an immediate impact with a series of strong administrative decisions soon after assuming office. His swift actions have reminded many of the larger-than-life governance moments often seen in director S. Shankar’s films.
In one of his first major decisions as Chief Minister, Vijay on Tuesday ordered the closure of 717 state-run liquor outlets operating near places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stands across Tamil Nadu.
According to the newly issued government order, all Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor shops functioning within a 500-metre radius of temples, mosques, churches, schools, colleges, and bus stands must be shut down within the next two weeks.
The move is being widely welcomed by the public, as liquor outlets have often continued to operate in sensitive zones despite existing regulations. In many cases, authorities were accused of overlooking violations, causing inconvenience to residents, students, and devotees.
By taking an official stand and ordering the closure of these outlets, Vijay’s government has sent out a strong message that violations will no longer be tolerated and that strict legal action will follow against any deviations. This marks the first major policy-level decision taken by Vijay after assuming office.
Soon after taking oath as Chief Minister on Sunday, Vijay also approved three key initiatives aimed at fulfilling his election promises. These include a welfare scheme offering 200 units of free electricity to domestic households, the formation of a dedicated task force for women’s safety, and the establishment of anti-drug units in every district to tackle the growing narcotics problem in the state.
Such rapid-fire decisions on the very first day in office are often associated with politically charged commercial films like Oke Okkadu. However, political observers believe it is still too early to judge Vijay’s long-term effectiveness in governance. While bold announcements create strong first impressions, the real challenge lies in implementation and sustaining administrative momentum over time.
Last week, Vijay scripted political history by leading TVK to a sensational victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 108 out of 234 seats and defeating several established political parties.
