Karuppu Makers Apologise Over Ilaiyaraaja Reference Controversy

The makers of Karuppu starring Suriya have issued a public apology after a dialogue from the film sparked controversy on social media for allegedly mocking legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja and referencing his ongoing copyright dispute.

Directed by RJ Balaji, the film has been receiving a strong theatrical response. However, a particular scene linked to the classic song Poradada from the 1985 film Alai Osai triggered backlash online, with several users claiming it indirectly targeted Ilaiyaraaja’s copyright battles over the unauthorized use of his music in films.

Following the criticism, the production house Dream Warrior Pictures released a detailed statement on social media platform X, expressing regret and clarifying their intent.

The makers stated that they hold “sincere respect and admiration” for Ilaiyaraaja and his immense contribution to Indian cinema and music. They emphasized that the dialogue was never intended to hurt or disrespect the legendary composer in any way.

According to the statement, the reference was part of a satirical moment in the film and not a personal remark directed at Ilaiyaraaja. However, acknowledging the concerns raised, the team confirmed that they would modify or remove the controversial portion in future versions of the film as a gesture of respect.

The statement further added that there was “absolutely no intention” to offend the composer, his legacy, or his rights, and that they deeply value his sentiments.

Karuppu, written and directed by RJ Balaji, features Trisha Krishnan alongside Suriya in lead roles. The film also includes Indrans, Natty, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, and Supreeth Reddy in key supporting roles. The music is composed by Sai Abhyankkar.
